Iran: What next
Iran: What next?
Off late, there has been a lot of talk in the media about the nuclear issue surrounding Iran. There is no doubt the current western stand on the Iranian ‘nuclear program’ is nothing short of a double standard. But that really is not the issue at hand. Another twist in this soap opera of the middle east is the recent letter sent by the Iranian President. It can’t be said for certain, what the objective behind sending the letter was. In the words of Ahmedinejad, ‘it was an invitation to Islam.’ President Bush on his part chose to ignore it. A few brownie points for Ahmedinejad in the Islamic world.
The recent failure of the US to have a resolution against Iran passed in the security council highlights how unconvincing the US side of the argument is and at the same time how smartly the Iranian authorities, and Ahmedinejad have used the media to their advantage.
So the big question remains, will the US attack Iran? Read the question again. I don’t mean to ask, will the US be ‘allowed’ to attack Iran? Despite the generous use of threats of war and use of nuclear weapons some how Iran doesn’t seem to be intimidated and the US still reluctant to attack in the face of defiance.
The fact of the matter is, the Americans simply cannot attack or at the least cannot risk it till the elections are over. An attack on Iran is a recipe for disaster. Not only does it destabilize an already volatile Iraq but it also puts American soldiers in the line of fire on two fronts. The Shiite bloc in Iraq, which has remained relatively calm, compared to the more active Sunnis is sure to unleash if the US were to attack. Forces loyal to Moqtada Al-Sadr have already shown that Shiite militias are not averse to fighting Americans.
An attack on Iran will not help the global economy either. With the rising prices of oil, the life blood of the world’s economy, things are sure to spin out of control if the Middle east witnesses another war of conquering.
I guess the only thing that remains to be seen is, what reason will the US use to justify its war on Iran. Another, 9-11 like incident? Or some event in Iraq which will be blamed on Iran.
Prophet Muhammad
(Peace and Blessings of Allah
be upon him) said,
“By He in Whose hand is my soul! The world shall not pass [away] before there comes upon people a day in which the murderer will not know why he has murdered, nor will the murdered one know why he has been killed.” [Muslim]
