asalaam alaikum, i have been unsure about the fatawa (if any)about the legality of suicidal bombing and killing to scare the infedals in islam, as has been done in 9/11 and the like. I recently watched a documentry on usama bin laden on cnn “in the footsteps of bin laden”…in which they related that some saudi aalims gave fatwa of such attacks being acceptble in islaam, and they showed a news clipping on it. Im interested in knowing the details of those verdicts/ fatawa….im sure u wud b able to help.

The question you have asked raises many issues.

First, what the stand of the ulama of Ahlus-Sunnah is with regards to Suicide bombing
Second, how the media uses this issue to its advantage.
Third, the reality of bin laden

First, we must understand the stand of the ulama of Ahlus Sunnah that suicide bombing is haraam. There can be no justification for it. Killing oneself is haraam in Islaam and the punishment for it is that he/she will continue injuring him/herself like that in hell, only death will not come upon him/her. Please click here for the full list of fataawa (plural of fatwa) (I strongly recommend you to read it). This would dispel the myth that the Saudi scholars say suicide bombing is permissible.

Second, there might be a minority group that feels this is permissible, and the media pounces upon that and makes it out as though it is the official belief of all muslims and that bin laden is the ideal muslim. Of course, no one ever trusts the mainstream media any more. So we must be wary of the tricks the media plays, not only to malign Islam and Muslims but to bias non-muslims against Islam. Third, Bin laden, as every one knows, went to fight the soviets in the afghan jihad. At that time he had the backing of the americans and the CIA supported him fully. After the jihad was over, the next big war to happen was the gulf war, in which he was against the Saudi Governments action of allowing american troops in to Saudi Arabia. This resulted in him making Takfeer of not only the rulers of saudi arabia, but against all rulers of muslim countries who did not rule according to Islam. Of course this is/was his view purely. Anyways, fast forward to September 11, 2001. The WTC attacks, which allegedly Osama bin Laden masterminded. Now there are many questions raised as to the possibility of the 9/11 attacks being an insider job. It is worth noting that the Bush Administration used these attacks to their full advantage, which helped them wage their many wars of profit. It is even disputed if bin laden is alive (see www.whatreallyhappened.com)

To conclude, we must not let our selves be mislead by these mischevious ploys and for all matters we must rally around the scholars and seek their advice and guidance in all matters.
