Can Menstruating Women touch the Qur’aan?

Salaamualaykum,

Today’s post deals with a common issue that our muslim sisters may face but probably never got authentic answers to. So this leads to two things - either we become extra careful or we take it easy. But our hope and desire should be to do the right thing. So here goes:

Can a menstruating woman touch a mus-haf (copy of the qur’aan) or recite the qur’aan?

The answer is:

- She should not touch the qur’aan
- She can recite the qur’aan without touching it. Also, she can hold it with a cloth while reciting.
- If she is reading a book of tafseer, then she may touch the mus-haf if the text of the tafseer is more than the actual qur’aanic ayaath even if it is slightly more. If the tafseer and qur’aanic ayaath are equal, then it is not permissible to touch it. And obviously, if the tafseer is less, then it isn’t permissible for a woman to touch the mus-haf.
I strongly advise everyone to read the full rulings for a more detailed discussion.

I pray to Allaah that he makes this information useful to all sisters. If you know anyone who could benefit from this, feel free to share this post with them.

And Allaah knows best.
