Job Hunting and Islam

If you’re in the process of hunting for a job or you’re preparing to face your next interview, then this post may be of some help to you.

Islam places a lot of emphasis on working hard to earn a halal living. The Ayaath and Ahadeeth on this are numerous. However, most of our youth today simply don’t have the skills needed to face an interview (even if they’re qualified) and therefore end up losing out on opportunities. I’ve listed some steps you can take while preparing for your next interview.

- Dua: There is no substitute to supplication. And the best supplication in these cases is Istikharah. You never know if this job is good for you or bad for you. What if you get the job as a construction worker and you die in an accident? Maybe not getting this job is a blessing. So be sure to supplicate a lot to Allah (SWT) and don’t forget to keep praying after you get this job. It’s very common for us to forget Allah (SWT) when something good touches us. It’s almost like we feel we’re independent of Allah (SWT). {Naoozubillah}

- Preparation: Make sure you prepare well and do your homework before going for your interview. Some of the things you should look for are -

Is this job halal? Not something to do with Riba or other haraam products?
What business is this company in?
What will my role be?
Who are their competitors?
What position does this company have in the market?

Knowing this information not only saves your akhirah but helps you understand the company better and this can even help you impress your interview and they’ll be happy to know you made the effort.

- Consultation: If you have any friends who are working in the same company or at least the same industry, it helps to consult them about this opportunity you have. It’s even better if your friend is religious because the chances of them advising you from an Islamic point of view are better. Like ‘I don’t know if that company is very ethical.’ or ‘I don’t think that company engages in halal business.’

- Attitude: This is probably the most important things after dua. Having the right attitude. You need to have a positive outlook and not despair or feel dejected. If you get rejected, try to find out the reason and work on that area. Working hard with the right attitude doesn’t contradict Tawakkul. Rather, they go hand in hand. Tawakkul without hard work is foolishness and contrary to the way of the Salaf. Hard work without Tawakkul is arrogance. You think your achievements are yours, but in reality they are from Allah (SWT) alone. So be confident, don’t feel that because you have a beard you’ll be rejected. What most good companies look for is the right attitude and not if you’re a bearded Muslim or not.

These are just some of the important points I could think of and I’m sure I missed some other good ones. I pray that Allah (SWT) makes easy the way for Halal sustenance for all sincere Muslims.
